Did you ever realize that clothes are our chosen skin? They are what we wish to communicate about our self and yet we get bored of them.

This constant need of buying is blurring the line between what we NEED and what we WANT. We are getting engulfed in a storm of consumerism. Brands-magazines-bloggers keep pushing trends and somehow that top you loved so much becomes “outdated” in a span of 3-4 months. How can the clothes that you loved immensely reduce to a pile of junk?

It has always been hard for me to part ways with any clothing item of mine or of my family’s. I try to get the most use out of them by converting them into new products or altering them according to my needs. You might ask “why don’t you donate them?”

I do donate clothes but only 10% of the donated clothes go through the cycle again and the rest go into our landfills. These clothes pollute our resources and further get into the food we eat, the water we drink and even the air we breathe. Is this the price you are ready to pay for the clothes that you could have upcycled? For the clothes you could have learnt to love again?

Upcycling is a sustainable practice. We do not need few people who practice sustainability perfectly, instead we need a lot of of them who practice it imperfectly. We all should take small steps to reduce our waste. It is not waste until we waste it.

So, whenever you feel like “throwing away” your clothes, think if you can upcycle them or make them into something more than what they are. Upcycling doesn’t mean that you are too broke or stingy to buy new stuff rather it means you have the luxury to DIY products with your imagination that are custom made for your needs and aesthetics. A little imagination can go a long way. Maintain an emotional connection with your clothes. Don’t be a victim of trends, rather discover your style because that will never go out of trend. Buy less, choose well and make it last!

Here are a few fun ways you can upcycle your clothes. Also keep in mind that it is not necessary that you need to know how to stitch, you can always find a tailor who would love to bring your imagination into reality.
